LGBTI Centre looking for interns

Gay & Lesbian memory in action centre (GALA)– a forum for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual and intersex education and culture in Africa has two intern positions available for individuals who are passionate about human rights issues, open-minded and comfortable engaging on topics of  gender and sexuality with LGBTI and heterosexual persons.

The internship runs for a five month period, starting from 1 August 2016. The positions are based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg with working hours of 08:30-16:30 Monday- Friday.

GALA will be paying a stipend for both positions

Qualifications and duties of each position are listed below

Graduate Archives Intern

Duties:

  • Assisting in sorting and processing collections
  • Assisting in preserving collections
  • Assisting in writing up inventories
  • Checking the contents of archival collections to make sure they are in in order, checking for missing files, making sure contents of boxes match inventories
  • Writing short articles about collections
  • Assisting with digitising collections
  • Assisting with updating GALA’s archive guide to collections
  • Transcribing of oral history interviews
  • Assisting with general administrative duties when necessary
  • Attending occasional events and documenting them for GALA (note taking, photographing, writing up an event description or report)
  • Assisting with any other projects and events that may be taking place at GALA during the internship period, these might include exhibition research, book launches, public talks and seminars.

Qualifications and competencies:

  • Minimum: undergraduate tertiary degree completed, preferably in the fields of History or Heritage Studies
  • An active interest in history and archives
  • The ability to work methodically and logically with large amounts of material
  • Ability to treat archival material with respect and care
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written
  • Able to follow instructions and work independently, as well as part of team when necessary

 

Media Intern

Responsibilities

  • Getting GALA’s three website’s up-to- date
  • Creating website content
  • Archiving old website content
  • Writing press releases and other media content
  • Developing a social media program for GALA (specifically Facebook and Twitter)
  • Attending occasional events and documenting them for GALA (note taking, photographing, writing up an event description or report)
  • Assisting with updating GALA’s archive guide to collections
  • Assisting with digitising archive collections
  • Assisting with general administrative duties when necessary
  • Assisting with any other projects and events that may be taking place at GALA during the internship period, these might include exhibition research, book launches, public talks and seminars.

Qualifications and competencies:

  • Minimum: undergraduate tertiary degree completed, preferably in the fields of Media Studies or similar
  • Highly computer literate – the candidate would need to be able to work on the backend of our websites, create and upload digital content, and engage on social media on behalf of GALA
  • An active interest in LGBTI history and activism
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written
  • Able to follow instructions and work independently, as well as part of team when necessary
